Can I give less than 1 star? Aside from grammar and punctuation errors (which detract from the author's legitimacy), the book is far too simplistic to be useful. Tips like 'don't store heavy items higher than waist height' are just common sense. There are many incorrect assumptions in the form of blanket statements and there was nothing useful for me in this book. In fact, it's not even a book. It'd barely be a pamphlet in a doctor's office. To quote, "A home is where the heart is and this is the sole reason why sick people opt to stay at home rather than in the hospital." Not true. Sometimes people cannot afford hospital or skilled nursing facility care. And, "No matter how good a hospital room is, it still lacks the elements that makes up a home which are love, care, compassion, joy and hope." I'm offended by this statement, as I see and live love, care, compassion, joy, and hope in my hospital daily, by multiple staff. And, "When people stay in the hospital, they feel like they are imprisoned, they are helpless and they feel the gravity of their condition." Also not always true. Many people feel safer in a hospital where they can be saved in moments if something goes wrong. For some patients, when they are admitted from a home that is dirty or they feel neglected, the care and attention they receive in a hospital is life-saving. This book is full of factual errors, makes far too many assumptions and is not well-researched. And, it's not really even a book. I do not recommend it at all.Schlessinger, Lindsey (2014-01-16). Home Health Care Guide Simple strategies for home health caring edition by Lindsey Schlessinger Health Fitness Dieting eBooks Reviews
I am a home health care nurse with 18 years experience as an RN in home care. I have worked with companies in private pay, insurance, and Medicare/Medicaid. Most of my current clients are facing acute, short term disability, but some will need care throughout the rest of their lives. Although most of my time is spent in direct patient care, I have also been in administration for a short time. I feel the book is mostly accurate except for stating that a companion can help with activities of daily living. In most states, this would be illegal as those activities require hands on activity on the part of the caregiver and thus a home health aide would be required.
However, I think the book is lacking in many areas
First, in most states, it is legal to perform home health care without any training IF hired directly by the client or their family. there are pros and cons to this and they need to be addressed.
Secondly, there are many things a family and/or client can do to make the initial process go smoothly.
One is to answer the phone. or at a minimum listen to voice messages. The agencies and the caregivers need to make contact with the client and/or family. You can't imagine how often the phone isn't answered "because we didn't recognize the number". Believe me, if you have an ailing family member at home, you will get lots of calls from lots of different numbers. And we won't come if we can't make contact prior to the visit. (because you might have gone back to the hospital or a doctor's appointment, or whatever at the time we intend to arrive.)
Two is to have a very visible house number on your home. this benefits us as well as EMS, which you will probably need sooner if not later.
Three is to be proactive medically. With all the HMOs out there, now, it's next to impossible to get as many visits authorized as a client needs. that leaves you to provide ALL the care after a very short time. But there are ways to improve on this. know what your family member can do and what they can't. Nag the insurance and case management companies with succinct, accurate complaints about the need for more visits. We can ask, but they just assume we are trying to drum up more business. Know what meds your loved one takes, and the changes that are made at every doctor's visit and hospitalization. Keep those meds separate from discontinued ones. Keep a calendar with doctor visits, names, numbers, fax numbers. We will ask you about them when we come.
If you are getting physical therapy, you will likely only get 1-3 visits. On the first, it's helpful to be able to state your own goals. Also be sure that you know how often to do the exercises and how to increase the reps safely. And DO them. Much as your therapist would love to be your fitness coach, and number one cheerleader, there isn't time for that. You need to take the initiative if you want to get well.
We give you papers for a reason please don't shred them. We need to refer to them every visit. You should read them and ask questions on the next visit.
When open enrollment occurs, know what your needs are, and seriously compare the availalble companies to see which ones meet the most of those needs. Then keep that info. Know all the companies your doctors accept and keep the fliers for those companies. You can switch during a short window if your choice isn't what you thought it would be.
I am a retired nurse and was expecting usable information such as problem solving and resources. What this book gives is about 5 pages of restating the obvious.

Home Health Care Guide by Jeff Carter is a great information source for people that are in need of specialty care. Knowing your options before you have to make a decision is best. The author does a nice job educating on the various options and considerations front and center when home health care is in the picture. Thanks for the great information!
Taking care of your loved ones not neccesarily means taking them to the hospital. You can easily take care of them at your own house, and this book totally gets it! It's full of clear, precise, down to earth advice we can instantly start applying into our lives. Cheers to the author, keep up the great work!
If you have children and your old parents living with you, you will probably know what I'm talking about. I bought this book with no expectations, but have to tell that I'm really surprised. The author offers a great content and it's totally worth it. The book shows a lot of tips on how to setup your home in order to take good care of your children and also the elderly. The price is good and I think you should try if you need it. I recommend it.
I got this book so as to be able to help my grandma. ‘Home Health Care Guide’ delivers what the title promises and provides you with some really useful tips, e.g. how to rearrange the kitchen, the bathroom. It is not only about helping the elderly but also the children or any bedridden person or a family member. Great quotes that ‘Home health care guide’ contains are thought-provoking and make you wanna help others. Thank you so much Author!
This book got me thinking about how important home care really is for people struggling with something that is holding them back from performing at their peak in any stage in life. It is such an important topic to learn more about of a multitude of reasons and i`m glad i came across this book. Recommended read for anyone really, you never know when you need it for yourself or anyone you love + the world need us to be more enlightened and ready to care for others in general.
